The PTFE coating helps the stir bar resist chemical attack from common extraction solvents, making it suitable for solvent-based processing work. Stir bars are consumable items that can wear over time or become lost, so keeping spares on hand helps avoid interruptions.
The stir bar is dropped into a vessel and rotated by the rotating magnetic field of a magnetic stirrer or stirring hot plate, agitating the liquid to keep the solution evenly mixed.
