A biosafety cabinet (BSC), or biological safety cabinet, is a ventilated enclosure that protects the operator, the sample, and the environment during work with biological materials. A Class II cabinet draws an inflow of room air through the front opening to shield the user, supplies HEPA-filtered downflow air across the work surface to protect the sample, and HEPA-filters its exhaust. They are widely used for cell and tissue culture, microbiology, and other BSL-1 to BSL-3 work.
Type A2 and Type B2 differ mainly in airflow. An A2 recirculates roughly 70% of its air and exhausts about 30%; it can return clean air to the room or vent outdoors through a canopy or thimble connection, and is the practical choice for biological work with little or no volatile chemistry. A B2 is a total-exhaust cabinet: it recirculates none of its air and must be hard-ducted outdoors, making it the option when volatile toxic chemicals or hazardous vapors are involved. Size the cabinet by nominal width and confirm your facility can support the required exhaust.
