What is the difference between a rotary evaporator and a distillation system?

A rotary evaporator strips and recovers solvent or pre-concentrates a crude extract by evaporating the volatile fraction under vacuum and condensing it. A distillation system separates target compounds from a feed by boiling point, often under deeper vacuum, to purify or fractionate them. In many workflows the rotovap removes bulk solvent first, then a distillation step refines the concentrated material.

Should I choose short-path or wiped-film distillation?

Short-path systems are typically smaller, batch-based, and strong for fractionation and high-purity polishing where throughput is not the priority. Wiped- or thin-film systems use a mechanically formed thin film and very short residence time for higher continuous throughput on viscous feeds, but they are not built for fractionation. Some operations run a wiped-film primary pass, then a short-path finish.

Why is a jacketed reactor useful?

A jacketed reactor has an outer jacket through which a heating or cooling fluid circulates, giving precise, uniform temperature control of the contents while stirring. That matters for reactions, crystallizations, and dissolutions that are sensitive to temperature. Glass jacketed reactors also let you watch the process directly. Size the reactor by working volume and confirm it suits your temperature range and any vacuum requirement.

How do I size processing equipment for my batch?

Match vessel or flask volume to your typical batch, leaving headroom so material can boil, stir, or expand without overflowing. Then check the operating envelope: the temperature range, the vacuum depth your process needs, and whether the unit is glass or stainless. Make sure your vacuum pump and heating or chilling support are sized to keep up, since under-spec support is a common bottleneck.
