What is the difference between a homogenizer and a regular blender or mixer?

A homogenizer applies far higher shear in a tight rotor-stator gap, breaking droplets and particles down to a much smaller, more uniform size than a blender or stirrer can reach. This matters for stable emulsions, repeatable analytical sample prep, and even dispersion of actives. Standard mixers blend bulk liquids; homogenizers physically reduce particle and droplet size.

Can a homogenizer make cannabis nanoemulsions for beverages?

High-shear and especially high-pressure homogenizers are commonly used to create cannabinoid nanoemulsions for water-soluble drinks, tinctures, and edibles. Reaching stable sub-micron or nano-scale droplets generally requires high-pressure homogenization or repeated passes plus appropriate emulsifiers. Benchtop rotor-stator units can make coarse pre-emulsions but typically will not reach true nanometer droplet sizes on their own.

How do I choose the right homogenizer size and probe?

Match the generator probe (also called a dispersing tool) to your sample volume. Narrow probes suit small tubes of a few milliliters, while larger probes handle beakers up to several liters. Check the unit's stated volume range and viscosity limits, and confirm probe materials resist your samples. Using a probe sized wrong for the volume gives poor mixing and slow processing.

Are homogenizer probes easy to clean between samples?

Rotor-stator generators are designed to disassemble for cleaning, which prevents cross-contamination between analytical samples. Many can run a solvent or detergent flush between uses, and some probes are autoclavable. For testing labs concerned with carryover, look for fully dismountable probes and verify cleaning compatibility with your solvents and sterilization method before buying.
